Handcrafted in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, this mini vase is made using the traditional barro negro technique developed and perfected by Doña Rosa, the artisan who discovered that Oaxaca’s clay could be polished with a quartz stone to achieve its signature deep-black shine.
Each piece is shaped by hand using a pre-Hispanic turning method—two concave clay plates rotating without a wheel—then carved, slowly dried in closed rooms, burnished, and finally fired. The firing process gives each vase its distinctive black or metallic-gray finish.
This size is ideal as a small decorative accent, a minimal floral vase, or a collector’s piece representing one of Mexico’s most iconic ceramic traditions.
